Welcome to the Igbo Language Forum at IgboNet. Igbo Language Forum is an Annex to the Igbo Language Center, whose homepage is located at http://ilc.igbonet.com . This forum is dedicated to the teaching, understanding, and propagation of the Igbo Language through the Internet.

Igbo Language Forum is not a discussion forum for politics and other life issues about Nd'Igbo or their experience in any country in Africa or elsewhere in the world. Such discussions should be taken to more appropriate forums. Posts in this forum that deviate from the stated objective will be deleted without further warning.

We will provide instructions and materials that should enhance member participation and make the experience an enjoyable one for all. Our primary instructor is Mazi Onyema Nwazue.

In the main forum, when we were discussing Igbo issues(politics, Igbo language, etc), in Igbo, we had been told that it was not the right place for such discussions, but in Igbo language forum.

But here, it has been made clear that this forum is for learning and understanding Igbo langauge. Where can those who know Igbo language express themselves? Or should everyone be reduced to learners?

Personally, I would like the following improvements in Igbo language:

1) a dictionary like the http://www.Igbolanguage.com, just like the http://www.dictionary.com. The first thing to establish in any language is the dictionary. It permits everyone to learn and teach the same thing. Verbs such as "igo" and "Izu" would be expresssed as meaning the same thing, thereby encouraging other synonyms.

2) a forum where anybody can express any idea in Igbo language, no matter the subject.

3) of course the Igbo language forum will continue to fulfill it's functions depending on each individual and their level of understanding of Igbo language.

4) to encourage people express themselves by writing in Igbo, no matter the section of the forum. The initiative or momentum should not be interrupted.

Ekenekwa m unu.

RESPONSE TO A RESPONSE

Thank you, Mazi Sylva, for your response to out-of-place contributions. Because you seem to have misunderstood the message of my text, I will recapitulate the essential points hereunder.

1. Igbo Language Forum is the Internet billboard for comments, questions, suggestions, observations, and ideas that contribute to varying degrees in deepening our knowledge of the Igbo language. It is also the rightful place for feedback on the language lessons, feedback from Igbo speakers and learners alike.

2. Igbo Forum is, on the other hand, a melting pot of collective issues affecting the Igbo Nation that lie outside the domain of language, the place for extra-linguistic contributions.

3. Every registered member of IgboNet is free to post on any of the two billboards materials written in Igbo and/or in English.

4. Members are requested to post language-related texts on the language forum, the medium of expression notwithstanding, and everything else on the alternative (Igbo) forum.

As the above points show, the restrictions you complained about do not in any way hinder you from expressing yourself in Igbo at any time, or from posting materials that are written exclusively in Igbo on either the language forum or the alternative forum. Your call for the creation of an additional forum where, as you put it, “anybody can express any idea in Igbo language, no matter the subject” is, therefore, meaningless nonsense. In any case, the onus is now on you to tell us the advantages such a forum will have over the existing ones, and how it will differ from them.

How am I supposed to interpret your statement that “the first thing to establish in any language is the dictionary”? We are aware of the pressing need for a comprehensive dictionary of the Igbo language. And we are doing our best to provide Ndi Igbo with one that they will for ever be proud of. Because it is nearing completion, we urge every potential user of the dictionary to be patient. Needless to say, we will consider an online version of it in due course.

I am not only anxious to read your contributions in Igbo; I am curious to see how well you express yourself in the language.
